Creating LGBTQIA+ Safe Environments: Scenario Discussion Panel
Aquatics and Recreation Victoria (ARV) are hosting a panel discussion for aquatic, fitness, stadium, and leisure centre leaders to navigate access, equity and inclusion scenarios occurring within community facilities.
Last year, ARV hosted a workshop that discussed LGBTQIA+ experiences at Aquatics and Recreation facilities. Feedback to ARV outlined a need to further explore industry-specific scenarios affecting inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people that are unique to Aquatics and Recreation environments, as well as discuss opportunities to respond.
ARV have identified key areas of support:
- How to navigate challenging scenarios
- How to respond when matters escalate
- How to ensure all patrons and staff are safe and supported, regardless of identity
To address this need, ARV have developed a specialised Scenario Discussion Panel - a forum of experts discussing de-identified case studies from within the industry. Panellists have been selected to bring various expertise, knowledge and experience to the discussion.
How the session will work:
De-identified case studies will be shared with the room. Panellists will constructively discuss the different perspectives, risks, regulations, and options.
Scenario themes will include:
- Changeroom access & usage
- Women’s-only spaces & programs
- Patron behaviours and profiles
An opportunity for Q&A will be incorporated in the session.
