How to Recognise and Respond to an Employee Who is Struggling

Why are We Running this Workshop?

Nearly 1 in 2 Australian’s will experience a mental disorder at some point in their life. With 75% of mental health issues occurring before the age of 25, young people have the highest prevalence of mental illness. This means if you are working with young people, it is very likely you will supervise someone experiencing stress, anxiety or depression.
Supporting the mental health of all employees has many benefits. These include retaining skills and experience, avoiding costs associated with hiring or retraining new employees, and most importantly, building a culture that shows all people are cared and valued.

What Will This Workshop Cover?

The workshop will cover how to identify the signs and symptoms of two common mental illnesses – anxiety and depression, including an overview of how these disorders develop and how they are treated.
We will discuss practical strategies for how you can approach and support employees who may be experiencing mental health issues, including common barriers. We will also discuss strategies for how to maintain a positive workplace culture at times when employees are struggling.

What Are the Objectives of this Workshop?

The objectives of this workshop are to:

  • Learn how to recognise when an employee is experiencing a mental health issue.
  • Learn how to respond to an employee experiencing a mental health issue (including what to say and what not to say).
  • Learn how to overcome common challenges in managing staff who may be experiencing a mental health issue.
  • Learn where to refer an employee who may be experiencing a mental health problem.
  • Learn practical strategies for maintaining a positive workplace culture when employees are struggling.

This workshop will be facilitated by ARV’s Mental Health Clinician/Consultant, Psychologist, Adele Bergin.

This workshop will be delivered as a webinar using Zoom.
